                  WORKING TITLE Yesterday crossword puzzle
                  Across
                  1. An extraordinary --- --- million was spent on marketing (not counting prints!), several times the production cost!
                  2. As a result of a negative reaction from a --- --- the intended love triangle sub-plot was scrapped and the film re-edited to ensure the protagonist was more sympathetic.
                  3. --- media (TV, DVD + streaming) accounted for a further $80m in revenues less than a year after theatrical release!
                  4. --- Dyer’s theory of the star system assumes that marketing (and production) is centred on star image and power, but Yesterday contradicts this with neither of the two lead roles actually getting named billing on the posters – which instead highlight films from the writer and director!
                  5. The everyman clothing, such as the very cliched checked shirt, of the protagonist used in the main poster campaign helped make him more identifiable (to use the terms from the uses and --- theory) or relatable
                  6. Unlike almost all Indie productions, Yesterday gained a --- international release, including a near-3000 screen US release. Quite a contrast from the fate of acclaimed Warp productions like Tyrannosaur and This is England!
                  7. Its very noticeable that the film somewhat swerves the usual WT approach of casting at least one major US star; the lead actor --- --- doesn’t even get billing on any of the many marketing posters! It is his recordings on the OST though!
                  8. At --- --- million this is a low to medium budget production by US standards, but very few UK productions reach this budget level!
                  9. With its central use of intertextuality, the main poster, with its use of the iconic zebra crossing shot, can be said to be an example of Baudrillard’s --- concept of the simulacrum.
                  10. It was intriguing to see the use of the hit film Slumdog Millionaire used – a social realist film that made good by using the feelgood ending and American dream concept, achieving a huge Oscar bounce – and not the director’s name (--- ---) on posters.
                  11. WT has one particularly important creative collaborator, who wrote Yesterday’s screenplay, but then so does Warp: --- ---, the director of the only Warp film to spark a franchise (albeit the sequels are TV series!) with This is England
                  12. The film is based on an original screenplay by Barth, though its Curtis who takes the main writing credit. Barth will never see a cent from his --- profit points!!!
                  13. The OST (--- soundtrack) featured cover versions recorded by the lead actor, and not the originals.
                  14. The inclusion of stubble on the main image used of the central protagonist connotes that while this may be a four quadrant production and marketing campaign, that does not extend to the --- market, as further denoted by the BBFC 12 rating!
                  15. Just like Warp’s ---, and WT’s own Baby Driver, the OST of Yesterday was both a significant source of revenue and a smart piece of marketing in itself, and was sold in vinyl as well as release through streaming sites.
                  16. The main poster centres on intertextualising the Beatles album cover for --- ---.
                  17. WT aimed high for their music cameo (though very low for music quality!) by originally approaching --- --- before casting the mind behind such horrors as Galway Girl!
                  Down
                  1. The movies he’s written and/or directed for WT have grossed over $2bn worldwide. A very commercial filmmaker! He’s been accused of racism for excluding BAME characters – perhaps Yesterday is a sign he’s finally woken up?!
                  2. Posters used the name of the screenplay writer’s --- ---, a film now associated with Xmas which despite its success didn’t use the usual strategy of having an American A-lister as a co-lead.
                  3. Film festivals aren’t usually so important to WT productions, but this one got its world premiere at the prestigious --- Film Festival, yet another way in which the market sought to target a wide market – not just young and old, male and female, but also seeking some degree of critical respectability for a (typically!) very commercial film.
                  4. The planned September release was pushed up to the much more lucrative summer season because the rights to the Beatles songs were about to revert to one of their co-writers, --- ---!
                  5. The signification of contemporary ‘talent shows’, solo male acoustic acts like Capaldi and Sheeran, and even the central protagonist’s achingly hip footwear on the posters helped give this film a --- element despite the obvious retro elements!
                  6. By combing rom-com with a touch of sci-fi to generate the dis-equilibrium that the Proppian hero must overcome, the production uses the technique of --- to boost its marketability across both genders.
                  7. Although the OST came out on a Universal Music Group subsidiary, this doesn’t quite amount to --- integration as NBC-Universal is no longer directly tied to UMG!
                  8. The body language of the main poster, with the lead striding purposefully, centrally framed and applying the rule of thirds, smartly anchors that he is the protagonist we’ll follow on what Campbell terms the hero’s journey or --- (as he argued this recurs across all cultures and time periods).
                  9. Yesterday is a typical example of how WT benefit from --- integration, with distribution through their parent company NBCUniversal.
                  10. The red-topped creator of some of the most popular/abysmal music of recent years, --- --- was heavily featured in the film trailer – making it all the more surprising he’s not highlighted or billed in the theatrical or even digital/streaming (home media) poster designs.
                  11. Lily James’ character would probably irritate Laura Mulvey – she is literally in the background of the medium two-shot posters she does feature in (most just show the male lead in long shot), v-cut top, red lipstick and open mouth. Even more so than her Baby Driver character, she fulfils the Proppian archetype of the --- or prize!
                  12. Its likely that many or most teens wouldn’t completely follow the preferred reading for the main poster design, with its Beatles intertextuality, but versions with the 3-part list tagline helped to --- the narrative concept!
                  13. Although WT have been relegated to a --- --- deal and no longer get automatic distribution through NBCUniversal or its StudioCanal subsidiary (so Baby Driver was released through Sony/Colombia for example), NBCUniversal did pick up this film for global distribution.
                  14. WT paid out --- million for the rights to use Beatles songs – that’s more than the total budget of any of Warp Films’ productions!!!
                  15. Usually the preserve of tentpole blockbusters, Yesterday was pushed up from its original --- slot for a summer release.
                  16. The screenplay writer has been previously criticised for his long-term failure to meaningfully represent --- characters on screen.
