To go more into depth with this term it means that when a country or region is farther away from another country or region the less interactions they are going to have. This is a commonly confused word because distance decay sounds like the part from Time-space compression when it says the world is shrinking so many people think that it means that the world is getting smaller or closer together.(CC, 1)
