Backpack Adventure: Animal Who's Who
Across
- 3. My wings look like hands with stretched skin between extra-long fingers.
- 7. I lay beautiful turquoise eggs—and sometimes raise three broods in one season.
- 10. My soft feathers help me fly in total silence so I can sneak up on dinner.
- 12. You’ll only see females of my kind collecting nectar—we make honey for winter.
- 14. Most snakes lay eggs—but I give birth to live babies.
- 16. I’m clever, masked, and always hungry—for frogs, fruit, or even garbage.
- 17. I can fly forward, backward, and sideways like a tiny helicopter.
- 18. I taste with my feet! When I land, I can tell if something is sweet.
- 19. I love to play, whether belly-sliding across snow or flipping underwater.
- 23. My giant nest, called an aerie, is so big you could lie down in it.
- 27. I’m a type of amphibian with bumpy, dry skin and a stubby body. My eggs come in long chains.
- 29. I wear a feathered mohawk that shows how I’m feeling—up when I’m upset, down when I’m chill.
Down
- 1. I hibernate all winter in my cozy underground burrow. Some folks call me a woodchuck.
- 2. I never stop eating—not even the egg I hatched from—before I become something new.
- 4. I spin strong silk webs to catch my dinner—then I might eat the web too!
- 5. When danger strikes, I flash the white underside of my tail like a warning flag.
- 6. When I’m scared, I lift my tail and spray a super stinky mist up to twelve feet.
- 8. My antlers can stretch over five feet wide. Some call them paddles.
- 9. My throat pouch puffs up like a balloon when I call—it helps me get really loud.
- 11. I live in a busy colony where everyone has a job—from finding food to laying eggs.
- 12. I can see underwater with my special eyelids and hold my breath for 15 minutes.
- 13. My front teeth never stop growing—I have to gnaw constantly.
- 15. You can hear my howl from ten miles away. It’s how I talk with my pack.
- 20. I’m fluffy like a deer, and just like them, my parents are bucks and does. But I’m called a kit!
- 21. My fur might be black, cinnamon, or even white, and I’m a great climber and swimmer.
- 22. I’m long and wiggly and can sneak into tiny spaces to catch mice.
- 24. I hibernate in big groups, sometimes thousands, under logs and leaves.
- 25. I can hear a mouse digging under snow—my ears are that sharp.
- 26. Most female songbirds don’t sing—but I do!
- 28. My bright red skin tells predators to stay away—I taste terrible!
