- 1. - to be made part of a political whole (adding land to another country).
- 2. of 1850 – agreement in the Congress that decided how states were admitted to the Union; made California a free state and changed Texas boundaries (Texas sold western and northern lands above the Missouri Compromise line to the U.S. for $10 million).
- 3. of Guadalupe Hidalgo – (1848) peace treaty that ended the Mexican War, set the Rio Grande river as the national border, gave lands from Texas to the Pacific ocean to the United States and caused westward expansion conflicts over slavery in the U.S.
- 5. - A form of government in which the people select representatives to govern them and make laws.
- 8. Annexation - when the Republic of Texas agreed to join the United States in 1845 as the 28th state in the Union. The annexation caused tension in Mexico because they feared the United States would take over all of Mexico.
- 9. Destiny - An 1800s belief that Americans had the right to expand, or spread, across the continent.
- 13. - Mexican War – (1846-1848) the war between the United States and Mexico that was the direct result of Texas annexation. The United States won the war gaining California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado from Mexico as a result of the war.
