Chapter 0 Vocabulary
Across
- 2. Terms that contain the exact same variables raised to the same powers. Only the coefficients (the numbers in front) can differ. They can be combined through addition or subtraction.
- 4. Expressions: Expressions that have the exact same value for any valid numbers plugged into their variables. They look different but behave exactly the same way mathematically.
- 5. A mathematical rule stating that multiplying a number by a sum or difference in parentheses is equivalent to multiplying that outer number by each term inside the parentheses.
- 6. Equations that have the exact same solution(s). They are formed by applying algebraic properties (like adding or multiplying the same value on both sides) to the original equation.
Down
- 1. A mathematical phrase containing numbers, variables, and operation symbols. It does not contain an equal sign and cannot be solved, only simplified or evaluated.
- 3. To find the numerical value of an expression by substituting given numbers in place of the variables and following the order of operations.
- 7. A mathematical statement declaring that two expressions are equal. It always contains an equal sign (=) and can be solved to find the value of the variables.
- 8. The specific value or set of values for a variable that makes the equation true when substituted in.
