Chapter One Vocab
Across
- 2. A term that does not contain a variable.
- 4. expressions A mathematical expression that has a combination of numbers and at least one operation. 4 + 2 x 3 is a numerical expression.
- 5. sequence A numerical pattern that increases or decreases at a constant rate or value. The difference between successive terms of the sequence is constant. Example: 2, 5, 8, 11, 14…
- 9. A replacement value for the variable in an open sentence. A value for the variable that makes an equation true.
- 10. expressions Expressions that have the same value or that have the same mathematical meaning for all replacement values of their variables.
- 12. form Numbers written without exponents.
- 13. sequence A sequence in which each termafter the nonzero first term id found by multiplying the previous term by a constant
- 15. A mathematical language that uses symbols, usually letters that stand for unknowns, along with numbersalgebraic expression- An expression consisting of one or more numbers and variables along with one or more arithmetic operations.
- 16. form Number written with exponents
- 17. of an expression In an expression of the form Xn, the base is x
- 18. A mathematical sentence stating that two expressions are equal.
- 20. of a number The product of a number and itself.
- 21. A statement that is true for any numbers or variables.
- 24. A set of numbers in a specific order.
- 25. An expression of the form xn, read x to the nth power. Example: 74 is 7 raised to the fourth power, or 7 x 7 x 7 x 7.
Down
- 1. notation A system of writing numbers using multiplication and powers of ten. A number of the form a x 10n, where 1 < a < 10 and n is an integer.
- 3. in an expression A number, a variable, or a product or quotient of numbers and variables.
- 6. The numerical factor of a term.
- 7. an equation The process of finding all values of the variable that make an equation a true statement.
- 8. the variable Choosing a variable to represent an unknown value in a problem, and using it to write an expression or equation to solve the problem.
- 11. A letter or other symbol used to represent an unspecified number or value.
- 14. Find the value of an expression.
- 18. A number that indicates how many times a number or expression is to be multiplied by itself. Example: In the expression 53, the exponent is 3.
- 19. of a number The product in which a number is a factor three times. Example: The cube of 2, or 2 cubed, is 8 because 2 x 2 x 2 = 8
- 22. or operations Evaluate expressions inside grouping symbols.Evaluate all powers.Do all multiplications and/or divisions from left to right. Do all additions and/or subtractions from left to right.
- 23. In an algebraic or numerical expression, the quantities being multiplied are called factors. Example: 3 and 11 are factors of 33
