Chemistry unit 2 vocabulary
Across
- 3. The number of protons and electrons in a given element.
- 8. The measurement of a mole of mass for any substance.
- 12. Odorless, colorless, gases with very low chemical reactivity, consisting of one atom and full electron shells. (helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon)
- 13. A way of expressing real numbers that are too large or too small to be conveniently written in decimal form.
- 14. A row of chemical elements. All elements in a row have the same number of electron shells. Each next element in a period has one more proton and is less metallic than its predecessor.
Down
- 1. A column of elements in the periodic table of the chemical elements. There is a number above each column stating the number of valence electrons for that group.
- 2. A negatively charged particle, located in the outermost shell of an atom.
- 4. With the exception of HYDROGEN, the elements on the left side of the periodic table are METALS. Elements on the right side of the periodic table are NONMETALS. The staggered stair step on the periodic table divides the metals from the nonmetals. Metalloids are located ON the stair step.
- 5. An atom or molecule that has a net electrical charge. (electrons are a different number from protons)
- 6. The mass of an element’s atom.
- 7. A group in the periodic table consisting of five chemically related elements. (Fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine)
- 9. Has more electrons than protons, giving it a net negative charge. To form, one or more electrons must be gained.
- 10. Has more protons than electrons, giving it a net positive charge. To form, one or more electrons must be lost.
- 11. When an atom has a full outer shell, giving it the configuration of a noble gas.
