  1. 7. A symbolic and literal border or line separating Europe into two areas, eastern Europe which was controlled by the Soviet Union and western Europe. Started at the end of WWII and ended at the end of the cold war.

  7. 16. This was named after Senator Joseph McCarthy from Wisconsin and the goal of the act was to eliminate all the communists in the US that were in the government, army, or any other influential job. Many Americans lost their jobs because they were accused with not much evidence of this.

The idea especially during nuclear warfare that if one country attacked another country then the country that was attacked would have enough weapons left to wipe out or destroy the attacking country. Ex: If Russia were to attack the US then the US would be able to produce a devastating counter attack.
  9. 19. An invisible boundary that separates two sides of conflict and is usually heavily guarded. Ex. Borders of NATO and Warsaw Pact countries.
  10. 20. A conflict between two major powers who do not want to fight directly against each other so they fight through third party countries by supplying the countries with the things needed for war like weapons, money, and training.

  1. 1. Exaggerated information that is usually biased in order to change people's views so that support will be gained. Ex. During the Cold War there would be propaganda to make enemies of war look evil.
  2. 2. A term from Karl Marx, who believed that Capitalism was bad and the working class should revolt against the wealthy in order to create an equal society. This led into Russia becoming the Soviet Union and becoming communist.
  3. 3. This is the radioactive debris that is left over from a nuclear bomb and spreads out for miles and is usually very deadly.
  4. 4. Created by Mikhail Gorbachev and it was meant to reorganize the Soviet Union community and make better living standards for the people in order to make the country more productive and modern.
  5. 5. North Atlantic Treaty Organization, it was created in 1949 for US, Canada, and Western Europe countries to prevent the Soviet Union from expanding their borders and influence. If the Soviet Union attacked one of the countries all the countries would fight back together united against the Soviet Union.
  6. 6. Many of these shelters were built during the Cold War and their purpose was to protect people from radioactive fallout from nuclear bombs until it was safe to return back outside.

  8. 11. Countries trying to gain secret information without permission by way of spying. This was a big weapon in the Cold War because countries gained knowledge of other countries advancements, plans, and weaknesses.
  9. 14. They were bombs made by NATO and the Soviet Union and kept advancing over time. They worked by either fission which was splitting atoms or fusion which was combining atoms releasing a huge amount of energy causing a lot of destruction.
  10. 18. A term that described countries that were neutral during the world war, usually in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, where small wars were fought between the superpowers in order to keep wars away from nuclear warfare.
