- 1. The arrangement of the growth rings in an irregular, circular appearance.
- 3. When the annul growth rings make an angle of less than 45° with the wide surface of the piece. Face characteristic is typically steeple like.
- 5. A bluish or grayish discoloration of the sapwood caused by the growth of certain dark colored fungi.
- 7. A well-defined accumulation of pitch in a more or less regular streak in the wood.
- 11. A growth that may distort the grain pattern and appear non-symmetrical.
- 12. Dart A well-defined accumulation of pitch in a more or less regular streak in the wood, typically short in length and scattered.

- 2. A surface condition exhibiting one or more of the following traits: fish scales, feathered or lifted, loose fiber.
- 4. A small round hole, (approx. 1/16” diam.) appearing randomly in a piece of wood that may have a dark edge at the perimeter.
- 6. A knot that is no more than 1/8” in diameter. Can be in dime size clusters.
- 8. A discoloration of the wood that is usually caused by micro-organisms or metals.
- 9. The distortion of lumber in a direction perpendicular to an edge, from a straight line from end-to-end of the piece.
- 10. An opening between annual growth rings that contains bark.
