  2. 2. A famous Union general who participated in some of the most important battles of the Civil War. His army destroyed Lee's army, forcing his surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. He later went on to become the 18th President of the US.

A master of reconnaissance, he took temporary command of Stonewall Jackson's unit in the Battle of Chancellorsville, after Jackson was fatally wounded at that battle. He was killed on the outskirts of Richmond while trying to defend it against Union troops.

He commanded a part of the Union forces at Antietam, although his overly precise orders caused confustion in the battlefield. After Antietam, he was given command of the Union Army of the Potomac. But, after the disastrous defeat in Fredericksburg, he was relieved of his command. His distinctive style of mustache gave it it's modern name.
