Across
  1. 2. Tectonics The theory that states that the earth’s crust is made of large sections, or plates.
  2. 3. The crust is the outermost layer of the earth. Compared to the other layers, the crust is very thin and cold.
  3. 7. Boundaries Areas where plates move toward each other and collide.
  4. 8. Boundaries These happen when 2 plates move away from each other. When this happens lava has room to come up through the cracks and form new crust.
  5. 9. Currents The circular movement of a liquid or a gas as it heats. It is believed that convection currents are what moves continental plates.
  6. 10. The large landmass that existed millions of years ago. It broke up to form today’s continents.
Down
  1. 1. Boundaries where plates essentially grind past each other with no subduction.
  2. 4. Drift The theory that the earth’s continent s used to be joined as a single, large landmass called Pangaea. Pangaea started breaking up millions of years ago. The continents slowly moved to their present positions.
  3. 5. The core is the center of the earth. It is made of solid iron and nickel, surrounded by melted iron and nickel.
  4. 6. The mantle is the middle layer of the earth. The mantle is made of liquid and solid rock that moves and churns.
