Across
  1. 2. The lighter part of the shadow during an eclipse. If you are in the penumbra, you will only see a partial eclipse.
  2. 3. The darkest part of a shadow during an eclipse. If you stand in the umbra during a solar eclipse, you will see a total eclipse.
  3. 5. The outer layer of the sun's atmosphere. It looks like a glowing halo around the sun during a total solar eclipse.
  4. 6. Includes the sun, eight planets, moons, asteroids, and comets that orbit the sun. Earth is the third planet from the sun.
  5. 10. The force that pulls objects towards each other. It keeps planets in orbit and makes things fall to the ground when you drop them.
  6. 12. When the moon is completely covered by the earth's shadow. The moon looks red because Earth's atmosphere is sunlight and only red light reaches the moon. This is called a "blood moon."
  7. 13. The path an object takes around another object in space. Earth orbits the Sun and the moon orbits the earth.
  8. 15. When the moon completely blocks the sun. The sky becomes dark, and only the sun's outer layer(the corona) is visible. People wear special glasses to watch it safely.
Down
  1. 1. When the moon only blocks part of the sun. The sun looks like a crescent, and the sky is not completely dark.
  2. 4. When only part of the moon moves into Earth's shadow. It looks like a dark bite has been taken out of the moon.
  3. 7. The center of our solar system. It gives us light and heat, helping plants grow and keeping Earth warm.
  4. 8. A rocky object that orbits the sun. Some asteroids are small, like a car, and some are as big as a city. They are mostly found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
  5. 9. When Earth moves between the sun and the moon, blocking the sunlight from reaching the moon. This makes the moon look darker or even red.
  6. 11. When the moon moves between the Earth and the Sun, blocking sunlight for a short time. This makes the sky darker, like early evening, even during the day.
  7. 14. Large object that orbits a star, like the sun. Earth is a planet where humans, animals, and plants live.
