- 3. One of Shamsoun’s younger brothers who plays on the Under 13 team.
- 5. A talkative and confident Iraqi refugee who leads the Under 17 Fugee team. He is one of the best players on the Fugees. Grows angry and embarrassed when the Under 15s score before his team.
- 7. He is one of the new recruits to the team. He has a mustache and is from Bosnia. Luma realizes his potential and talent, so she puts him in as the right forward. He misses a shot set up by Mandela.
- 8. The coach of the 3 Fugees teams (Under 13s, Under 15s, Under 17s). She is very devoted to her teams and her players, pushing herself to exhaustion in order to help them and their families. She attempts to fold the Under 15s team for multiple reasons, but is persuaded by the YMCA, Kanue, Mandela, and Natnael to reinstate the team. She becomes so anxious before the first game of the reinstated Under 15s that she is sick.
- 11. He is a returning player, one of the three ‘anchors’, and helps recruit new players. Luma puts him in at left mid.
- 12. The mayor of Clarkston, he is against letting anyone use Milan Park for soccer. He avoids Luma’s request to use the field by telling her to appeal to the town council.
- 13. A Liberian player who recruited Tito to the Fugees.
- 16. He is one of the three ‘anchors’ of the Under 15 team. He is instrumental in recruiting new players for the team tryouts. Luma puts him in as the center midfielder. He reacts with relief upon the reinstatement of their team and tells Luma of his appreciation for her. He loses his temper when tackled by one of the Under 17s players but learns from that experience to become a leader on the team, a calming influence who always gives confident instructions to his teammates.
- 17. Tarpeh He used to be on the team, but refused to come to tryouts because he felt it was demeaning. He decides to make his case to Luma during the scrimmage, but he ends up leaving before the scrimmage is over, therefore leaving the team for good.
- 19. She is the team manager for the Fugees. Speaks highly of Luma in her expectations for people and her view of how the world should operate.

- 1. He is one of the new recruits. He is Hamdu’s brother; they are both Somali Bantu. He is placed by Luma in defense with his brother almost immediately because they are both determined and talented.
- 2. A quiet and graceful Sudanese player who also helps to lead the Under 17 Fugee team. His younger brothers play on the Under 13s team.
- 4. One of Shamsoun’s younger brothers who plays on the Under 13 team.
- 5. He came to watch the second tryouts for the Under 15s team and was joined in watching by his friend Fornatee.
- 6. Bienvenue’s older brother. He had tried out for the Fugees team in the past and is one of the six returning players. Luma puts him in as defense.
- 9. A wiry but tenacious Kosovar midfielder who scores a goal in the Under 15s first game.
- 10. He is one of the new recruits on the team who came to tryouts. He and Jeylani are Somali Bantu brothers, and they are ‘relentless on defense’.
- 14. (last name) He is rhetorically asked for advice by Luma on what to do about the Under 15s team. He talks to Fornatee when Fornatee arrives at the scrimmage, asking him what it feels like to be off the team and if he was anxious to talk to Coach.
- 15. He is one of the returning members and one of the three ‘anchors’ who help recruit. He is disappointed because most of his friends are not on the Under 15 team anymore, so he becomes moody and sullen. Despite this, he performs remarkably well in the teams scrimmage and game, apart from his lashing out at his teammates.
- 18. One of the three people who attend the Under 15s game, he is a Liberian recruit who hopes to make the team someday.
