- 2. Delaware : at fifteen he graduated and proceeded to study law at the office of John Moland in Philadelphia.
- 3. New York : He was a member of the Suffolk County Militia in the early conflict with Britain, attaining the rank of Major General
- 4. Virginia : He was appointed clerk to the Committee which formed the rules of conduct and elections in the House of Burgesses in 1746.
- 7. Maryland : he was a local leader in the patriot movement in the late 1770s.
- 8. Delaware: he served three states.
- 11. Rhode Island : In 1785 he became a strong and vocal advocate for the abolition of slavery.
- 13. New York : He served in the Provincial legislature shortly before the troubles with Gr. Britain began and before it was dissolved by the royal governor.

- 12. Pennsylvania : he undertook negotiations with the Northwestern Indians on behalf of his colony, and took a seat as vice-president of the first constitutional convention for Pennsylvania
