- 2. Religion. Marx said "Opiate of the people" - kept them happy and “drugged”. Used to make people obedient. Religion was tolerated because people would work if they had some form of future reward. Stalin knew religion would stop violent revolutions.
- 3. Joseph Stalin. Not a very persuasive speaker. Got greedy with the power that came from leadership. Eliminated those who disagreed with his ideas. Used KGB, church, and propaganda to control the masses.
- 4. Working-class women or the motherly proletariat. Kind-hearted but powerless to stop corruption. Realized too late that the revolution’s ideals have been betrayed.
- 5. Adolf Hitler. Was interested in the economic gain from a partnership with Russia. Turned on Stalin during WWII.
- 7. Industrialization under Stalin. Represents the Five-Year Plans — ambitious projects meant to modernize the Soviet Union, but achieved through exploitation and lies.
- 8. Western businessmen who traded with the Soviet Union. Represents outsiders who ignored human suffering for economic profit.
- 9. KGB - Secret Police. Not really police, but forced support for Stalin. Used force, often killed entire families for disobedience. Totally loyal, part of Lenin's power, even over army
- 10. The Kremlin. The seat of power where the rulers live in luxury while the rest suffer. Symbolizes privilege and corruption of leadership.
- 16. Working class. People believed Stalin because he was "Communist" Many stayed loyal after it was obvious that Stalin was a tyrant. Betrayed by Stalin who ignored and killed them. Rewarded for blindly following leadership.
