Basic Yearbook Vocabulary

1. This refers to the page number and the topic of a spread placed as a unit at the bottom left and bottom right of the spread.
6. Two facing or side-by-side pages in the yearbook such as 2 and 3, 4 and 5, 6 and 7, etc. Also called a layout.
7. Eight pages make up a flat AND one-half of a signature.
11. A verbal statement and a visual look which tie all parts of the yearbook together.
12. A set of 16-pages made up of two 8-page flats.
13. Final pages of the yearbook (typically one page) where the theme is concluded.
14. A spread used to separate each of the sections of the yearbook.
16. Listing the pages containing the sections, opening, closing, and index.
17. The main story of a yearbook spread.
18. A line of large type used to gain the reader’s attention; the title of the copy or story.
19. A page-by-page listing of the yearbook’s contents to stay organized and to plan for deadlines.

2. The first 2 to 4 pages that introduce the theme.
3. Elements such as rule lines, gray screens, large initial letter and special type treatments which enhance the book’s design.
4. Heavier sheets of paper which hold the pages of the yearbook to the cover.
5. A theme-related content element such as a photo strip, a folio presentation, a listing or quote box that runs consistently throughout the entire yearbook.
8. Page one of the yearbook. It should include all the school information.
9. This is a way to organize like pages in your book and is typically broken up into five areas
10. Connects the front and back covers. The name of the school, name of the book, city/state, volume number and year should appear here.
12. A phrase linked to the main phrase used as section titles, headlines, etc. They help carry the theme throughout the book.
15. A complete alphabetical listing of all people and events covered in the yearbook.
16. Outside of the yearbook which protects the contents.
17. Refers both to the topics featured on individual spreads and how the topics are highlighted.
