- 8. beautiful girl with eyes like Egypt and dark nylons. She is E's friend. The kids tell rumors about her at school. Comes from religious home and her father is abusive/beats her. She isn't allowed to go out. E feels bad for her and thinks she is pretty and wants to be like her.
- 10. Beautiful, young woman whose husband keeps her locked up because he is afraid she will run away. Has girls buy juice for her so she can escape reality and feel like she is away on an island. E likes her.
- 11. and Rachel Sisters who are neighbors w/ Esperanza. Dress is old, raggedy clothes. Young and not very smart. Esperanza likes them and wants them as friends.
- 13. Large woman who is mother to the man across the street. She doesn't speak English and is homesick for her country. Her son wants her to speak English and accept USA as her new home. E feels bad for her.
- 15. Only a little older than E. Has 2 kids and her husband left her. Husband beats and abuses her but ske keeps letting him back in. She writes poems. E feels bad for her and like she can't help her.

- 1. "Queen of cats" French, rich neighbor of Esperanza who wants to move out of Mango St. neighborhood. Esperanza thinks she is snobby.
- 2. Vargas Has too many children who are rude and bad. Husband left her. Esperanza feels bad for her and sympathizes with her.
- 4. "witch woman" or palm reader who reads Esperanza's palm and tells her fortune. She has kids who she hits but loves. Tells Esperanza that "home is in the heart". Esperanza is upset at her fortune because E wants her to say she is going to get a new home - one that she likes.
- 6. of Tennessee married and has a wife somehwere although they never see her. Lives next door to Esperanza. He is a jukebox repair man who brings home ladies. Esperanza is curious about women he brings home.
- 7. Juan Ortiz - Won first annual Tarzan jumping contest (jumps from tree) and broke both arms. Moved into Cathy's house and has a dog that he acts and looks like. Esperanza thinks he is wild and clumsy.
- 8. Boy in E's neighborhood. Likes young, pretty girls. Watches Esperanza which makes her scared but she doesn't show it. E's parents tell her to stay away from him.
- 9. and Kiki Esperanza's brothers who live in their own world. Won't be caught talking to Esperanza or other girls unless they are inside the house.
- 10. Edna's daughter who is tall and skinny with red lipstick. She is a "grown up who likes to play". She is very indecisive and has trouble expressing herself and needs mom to make decisions for her. She is not grown up enough to handle the adult world. Married but doesn't live with husband.
- 12. E's aunt. Was a swimmer and pretty. She had illness that made her legs not work properly. She ends up dying from this illness. E shares a poem with her that Aunt Lupe likes and tells her to keep writing. E imitates her while playing charades with her friends one day and later feels guilty. She did like and love her aunt.
- 14. Young and smart. Mom died so now she has responsibility to make meals for the family. Her father expects this of her. Alicia says she sees mice early in the morning while making breakfast in her home but her father doesn't believe her because he never sees them and isn't up this early. Alicia studies at the University in order to escape this lifestyle. Esperanza likes her and thinks she is smart.
