Across
- 2. everyone is a huge part of one. The motivation for many of the actions of the characters throughout both chapters. Maya cares for Bailey so much that she feels the need to scold Bailey. Joyce doesn't "have" any family therefore Bailey is more willing to steal and do things for her. Momma understands the loss of family is helping Mr. Taylor through his problems. Mr. Taylor lost his wife
- 5. A rhetorical device that is used to help the reader understand what things may look like. A Very common device used in this book to help the reader envision the effects of the Global Issue on the respective characters. Mr. Taylor is sad and this device shows this, as well as Bailey after Joyce left.
- 7. while not explicit it was definitely a part of this story. A lot of the characters actions are driven by this.
- 9. Something that people are heavily involved in. Involves the use of deities. In chapter 21, Maya's motivations to maintain herself in Bailey's affairs is backed up by this.
Down
- 1. A lot of it is present during this chapter. It it used to present some banter between the characters (offer up humor for example). More importantly, gives a path for more of the common themes found in the book. In Chapter 22, the banter between Mr. Taylor and Mama (which was also commented on by Maya),to further the theme of grief.
- 3. Normally this goes into five stages. Bailey and Mr. Taylor go throw different stages of this and show a different cleve of acceptance when they reach the end of this. It is important to note that with the development of this, they become different people out of it. Bailey becoming more reserved and Mr. Taylor appreciating and understand this.
- 4. all characters deal with this differently. Obviously Mr. Taylor is the biggest instance of loss. So much so that he loses apart of himself just as Bailey felt with Joyce that he had palled. Maya loses Bailey, as well. She felt as if he lost his sense of self (she even notes that he was less sarcastic).
- 6. A natural part of life. Bailey experiences his real first, and because of this, he starts to do everything for Joyce. Mr. Taylor loved his wife so much that he even started dreaming about her. Maya and Momma are examples of platonic love. Here Angelou explains the importance of love, and why it is a huge factor in the African-American status.
- 8. African-American's lacks this. They don't have this so they use it to indulge in other thing such as family and religion (which become some of the global issues discussed throughout the book). The diaspora of Africans through the slave trade contribute towards this. Along with racism, discrimination, and wealth.
