Across
  1. 1. Passageway leading from pharynx to lungs. Conducts air from pharynx to lungs.
  2. 8. Found in the form of rings, they support the trachea, preventing it from collapsing.
  3. 9. Connects mouth and nasal cavity to the larynx and esophagus. Collects incoming air from nose and mouth, passing it to the trachea.
  4. 10. A flap-like structure that prevents food from entering the trachea
  5. 12. Conducts air into the nasal cavity
  6. 13. Warms incoming air to prevent damage to lung tissue. Hairs lining the cavity filter the air of unwanted debris.
  7. 15. Tiny air pockets that are the site of gas exchange.
Down
  1. 2. Small blood vessels that surround the alveoli, carrying away oxygen and “dropping off” carbon dioxide
  2. 3. Passageways that branch from the bronchi into the lobes of the lung. They subdivide into smaller and smaller tubes.
  3. 4. A muscle layer at the bottom of the thoracic cavity that contributes to inspiration and expiration (breathing).
  4. 5. Catches and holds onto dust, germs and other unwanted material.
  5. 6. Tiny hairs that line the respiratory tract. They have wave-like motion, moving mucus upward and out to the throat where it is swallowed or coughed up.
  6. 7. Contains the vocal cords.
  7. 11. Passageway that branches from the trachea into the lungs. There is one bronchus per lung.
  8. 14. A respiratory surface contained within the body of an animal, but connected to the outside air by passageways.
