  1. 2. speech culminates in a kiss, and this is obviously what Romeo has been angling for throughout the conversation. The kiss itself is as dramatically satisfying to the audience as it is delightful to the lovers. There is, perhaps, an ominous sense in which the kiss not only seals the lovers’ romance but also their tragic fate.
  2. 3. gets the first four lines with Juliet an equal number of replies. They then share a quatrain (Romeo 3 lines, Juliet 1) and the final rhyming couplet. There is a marvellous feeling of naturalness in their witty exchange – notice the way in which Juliet matches Romeo’s verbal quips and the dialogue flows beautifully.

  1. 1. Rosaline’s description of Rosaline, this exchange is mutual and less self-indulgent. There is no self-pity, and the imagery is shared between the speakers. The language, while religious in nature, is less hyperbolic and more intense and intimate.
